Your list

Paste a single column from a spreadsheet if you like. Commas stay part of the name. Up to 200 lines.

No list applied yet.

Example names, for trying the tool.

This list is only used, temporarily, by the classroom tools in this tab. Refreshing, changing language or leaving the classroom tools clears it.

Groups are made as even as possible, so some may have one person fewer.

How to make random groups

  1. Paste your list

One name per line, then apply the list. You can paste a single column from a spreadsheet.

  2. Choose how to split

Set the number of groups, or the largest size a group may have.

  3. Generate and share

Generate the groups, then present them to the class or copy them as text.

Example: a class of 25

Sizes never differ by more than one, and the larger groups come first.

  • 5 groups

    5, 5, 5, 5, 5

  • 6 groups

    5, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4

  • At most 4 per group

    7 groups: 4, 4, 4, 4, 3, 3, 3

"At most 4" makes the fewest groups that keep everyone at or under four, then evens them out, rather than filling groups of four and leaving one person on their own.

Questions

Is the group generator free?

Yes. It works in the browser with no account and uses no AI credits.

What is the difference between the two ways to split?

"Number of groups" makes exactly that many groups. "Largest group size" makes the fewest groups that keep every group at or under that size.

What happens when the class does not divide evenly?

Group sizes differ by at most one, and the larger groups come first. 25 people at most 4 to a group become 4, 4, 4, 4, 3, 3 and 3.

What if two students have the same name?

Each line is a separate person. Same-named people are marked with their line number in the groups and in copied text, so you can tell them apart.

How many names can I use?

At least two and at most 200, one per line, each up to 80 characters.

Can "Shuffle again" give the same groups?

Yes, by chance. Every shuffle is new and random; it does not try to avoid the last groups.

Can I keep certain students together or apart?

No. Groups are random and balanced only; there are no rules for partners, ability or other details.

What if copying does not work?

Some browsers block the clipboard. The groups then appear as text you can select and copy yourself.

Is my list saved?

No. The list stays in this tab while you move between the classroom tools. Refreshing, changing language or leaving the classroom tools clears it, and groups are cleared whenever you leave this page.
